As the wintry weather sets in, we all want to make sure we are getting the most out of our heating. Never before has this been more important than in these uncertain times as we all look for ways to keep costs down and improve efficiency. Follow these top tips to get the most out of your central heating system.

Show your boiler some TLC

A boiler and central heating system that are working efficiently will mean lower bills. Make sure your boiler is serviced at least once a year. This can help to identify issues which could become big or costly problems in the future. You’ll also need to fire your boiler up regularly, not just in the winter months. This keeps parts in good working order and makes sure it can be called upon if the temperature should drop suddenly. You should also pay attention to your boiler’s pressure gauge to check it is within the manufacturer’s recommended levels. Pressure valves can get knocked easily and become loose over time, so always make sure these are tightly shut. Any fluctuations in pressure or unusual noises should be reported to a Gas Safe engineer.

Look after your radiators

If your central heating is sluggish, your boiler has to work harder to heat your home. Radiators should be bled regularly to remove trapped air, which can prevent them from heating up evenly. With your central heating off, release the bleed valve and allow the excess air to escape, collecting any escaping water in a jug or old towel. Radiators also need to be flushed out every now and then to remove sludge. You may want to use a central heating inhibitor to tackle corrosion and sludge and improve efficiency. Adding insulation to walls and loft spaces and draught-proofing windows and doors can also help to keep your home warm and cosy this winter.
