MK Electrics provides PAT testing for businesses, schools, landlords and industrial sites throughout Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and the wider North East.

As an NICEIC accredited electrical contractor with over 14 years’ experience, we test portable appliances, record the results and deal with anything that fails. Because we are a full electrical contractor, we can also repair or replace faulty equipment and look into any wiring problems the testing uncovers.

Who We Provide PAT Testing For

PAT testing is relevant to any organisation with portable electrical equipment. We regularly work with:

  • Offices and professional services: computers, monitors, printers, kettles, heaters and extension leads
  • Schools and nurseries: classroom equipment, AV equipment and staff room appliances
  • Retail, hospitality and leisure: shops, hotels, pubs, restaurants and gyms
  • Commercial kitchens: cooking, preparation and cleaning equipment that is moved, washed and exposed to heat
  • Industrial and manufacturing sites: workshop tools, portable machinery and 110V equipment
  • Landlords and property managers: appliances you supply to tenants, with a record for your files

If you are not sure whether your equipment needs testing, contact us and we will advise.

How Our PAT Testing Works

  1. Planning. We agree the number and type of items, where they are and when we can have access, so the visit causes as little disruption as possible.
  2. Visual inspection. Each item is checked for damage to the plug, cable, casing and fuse.
  3. Instrument testing. Where required, we test earth continuity and insulation using a PAT tester. The checks depend on the type of appliance.
  4. Labelling. Every item is marked as a pass or fail, with the date of the test.
  5. Records. You receive a record of every item tested and the result, which you can use to show your equipment has been checked.

What Happens If an Item Fails?

A failed item should be taken out of use straight away. We label it, tell you what the fault is, and can repair or replace it where it is practical to do so. If a failure points to a wider problem, such as a damaged socket or fixed wiring, we can investigate and put it right as part of our wider electrical maintenance and repairs service.

How Often Should You Arrange PAT Testing?

The right interval depends on the equipment and where it is used. Handheld and frequently moved items are tested more often than stationary equipment, and kitchens and construction environments need more frequent testing than offices. Our guide explains the typical intervals in full: how often should PAT testing be done.

If you would like us to manage this for you, we can set up a regular testing schedule so each item is tested when it is due.

Is PAT Testing a Legal Requirement?

Not directly. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers and the self-employed to keep electrical equipment in a safe condition, but they do not name PAT testing or set how often it should be done. Regular testing is the usual way to show you have met that duty, and many insurers and clients expect to see up-to-date records.

How Much Does PAT Testing Cost?

The cost of PAT testing depends on the number and type of items, how easy they are to reach, and how far we travel. Send us a rough count of your equipment and where you are based, and we will give you a clear quote before any work starts.

PAT Testing FAQs

What does PAT stand for?

PAT stands for portable appliance testing. It is the routine inspection and testing of electrical appliances that plug into a socket, to check they are safe to use.

What equipment needs PAT testing?

Anything with a plug can be tested, including computers, kettles, extension leads, power tools, heaters and kitchen equipment. Fixed wiring is checked separately through an electrical installation inspection.

How long does PAT testing take?

It depends on the number of items and how easy they are to reach. We will give you an idea of the time needed when we agree the scope with you.

Do new appliances need PAT testing?

Usually not before first use, as new equipment should arrive in a safe condition. Give it a visual check, add it to your equipment list and include it in your regular schedule. Anything repaired, modified or bought second-hand should be tested.

Can you PAT test in a commercial kitchen?

Yes. Kitchen equipment is moved, cleaned and exposed to heat and moisture, so it is usually tested more often than office equipment. We test it as part of the same visit.

Can I carry out PAT testing myself?

In low-risk environments a trained person can do the visual checks. Instrument testing needs the right equipment and the knowledge to interpret the results, so most businesses choose a qualified contractor, which also gives them a proper record.
